AUTHOR Q&A FOLLOWED BY LIVE MUSIC GIG

I am joining fellow indie authors Simon Williams of fierce panda records fame and Steve Lamacq of BBC 6 music fame to talk about our respective books about music. This event will take place at Bull and Gate in Kentish Town. The pub stopped doing gigs ten years ago and turfed us out, but now the brewery Youngs are pondering whether to ditch the triple-fired chips cooked in goose fat and do live music again. Doh! So this night is a test run with three bands playing after we stop reminiscing. It’s free entry—

ONE MAN SHOW

Yes, tickets have just gone on sale for my one man show in London.  The venue is in a repurposed crypt under St Georges Church in Bloomsbury. It’s a lovely space with a fully stocked bar, so I would love you to come along if you are in the hood. Doors at 7:30 pm, and the show starts at 8:30 pm with a few live numbers thrown in. ‘Gig theatre’, they call it apparently.

4 – 28 August 2022 | Edinburgh Fringe

Friday 12 August | Edinburgh, BBC Radio Scotland, The Afternoon Show

Live radio interview with Nicola Meighan. You can listen on BBC Scotland player.  I think.

Anoint My Head Edinburgh preview

With a week to go I was still unsure of my Edinburgh show.  This night proved to be a game changer. In front of three people my rambling set turned into a three hour workshop as I tried stuff out and got honest feedback from Gid, Miri and Rod. I finally realised what the show was and what it wasn’t — a tightrope walk between knowing and delusion. Too knowing and you come across smug but too delusional and the audience feels uncomfortable.  Roughly 80/20 knowing delusion.  I’m on the audiences side, or am I?  I’m not sure I know.

Anoint My Head Edinburgh preview (Joy Of Addiction book launch)

“Never trigger music from a mobile phone on stage, babe!” And so it was that, halfway through my set, my phone rang through the speakers. It was my son, Elliot, telling me that Grandma had fallen down the stairs. “It doesn’t look good,” he said. I hung up and told my small audience of eight people—who had no idea—that it was my mother-in-law. It was my first laugh, and as mother-in-law jokes go, it was pretty unbeatable—except it wasn’t a joke. As I left the stage to ring Sarah, bemused faces suggested people weren’t sure if it was part of the show. It wasn’t. At the end, my PR woman, Mel, said she had loads of notes.

Think this was the show where one member of the audience mimed slitting my throat.  Most off-putting.

Thursday 21 April 2022 | London – Rock ‘n’ Roll Book Club @ Dublin Castle Camden

Anoint My Head Book Launch. Q&A hosted by Tony Gleed

Blimey that was fun.  Thanks Tony Gleed for having me at your wonderful rock n roll book club. U are a lovely, warm host and have fanned the flames of my rock n roll delusions to dangerously hot levels.  And thanks if you came along/laughed/heckled/sung along. It’s totally gone to my head and I can feel my inner Horace rise. Must keep him at bay.  Must keep him at bay. Must keep him at bay. Edinburgh next…

Sunday 13 March 2022 | BBC Radio London – Robert Elms Show

Live Radio interview…eek!

Gosh that was a stressful/fun morning. I was due on the Robert Elms show for a live interview about my Anoint My Head book at 9:30 am. I just had to drop my 14 year old son Elliot at his football match at 9:20 giving me a precious ten minutes to gather my thoughts ahead of a phone call from the BBC producer. At 9:15 I became aware we were running late, at 9:20 I also became aware we were lost and then at 9:24 Elliot informed me that I needed to stop the car pronto coz he was going to vomit. I didn’t know if this was from car sickness, genuine illness or the fact he got in late from a party last night. But I told him in no uncertain terms and in a slightly high-pitched panicky voice that it was rather bad timing. At 9:29 we found football ground and I pushed my post-vomit son out of the car just as the BBC producer rang to say I was about to go on air…

Unfortunately the conversation is no longer available but I had fun talking about The Pointy Birds, Ricky Gervais, Britpop and mis-filing vinyl at Selectadisc, all of which you can read about in the book wot I wrote, Anoint My Head.
